About Us

Only in silence the word,
Only in dark the light,
Only in dying life: Bright the hawk’s flight
On the Empty sky

-Ursula K. Le Guin, A Wizard of Earthsea

Often time we seek counseling because we desire light and want to escape our inner darkness. Perhaps because of our tendency to avoid pain, we either become fixated on things that we want to escape, or feel apathetic about them. Gradually, what we see through our eyes are darkness and despair, or nothing at all.

The name of our psychotherapy clinic in Chinese is Rì Yīn. Rì (日) is the Chinese word for “sun”, while Yin (音) means “sound”. These two words combined is actually another word, Àn (暗),which means darkness in Chinese. Not only are Rì Yīn written words, but they also have symbolic representation. When two people get connected in the therapeutic space, it is through listening and understanding, one’s inner darkness can resurface. Only when we recognize both light and darkness within, we can feel whole again and fully experience the lightness that we desired.

    Counseling

We have a bilingual psychotherapist who can help the international community in Taiwan with any adjustment issues and mental health concerns.

About Me

I’m a licensed counseling psychologist (#001191) in Taiwan. I graduated from Boston University with a B.A. in Linguistics, and then I completed a Master’s degree in Psychological Services from the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn). While at Upenn, I interned in an inner-city high school. This experience helped me learn firsthand the influence of social and cultural factors on all of us and inspired me to pursue a doctoral degree in counseling psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Even though I did not obtain the degree at the end, I did complete 5 years of PhD-level coursework and two advanced clinical practicums with an emphasis on Multicultural Counseling. I have more than 20 years of experience as a psychotherapist and have worked in a number of settings including university counseling centers, community mental health center, and in private practice.

Services I offer

I worked with clients who have many different types of issues. Some of the issues include, but are not limited to the following:

Relationship problems (romantic relationships, family, marriage, work-related, interpersonal relationships, etc.) Emotional concerns (depression, anxiety, grief, loss, anger, etc.) Adjustment (any major life changes, including, but not limited to work, school, new relationship, break-up, and cultural transitions) Sexual concerns (identity, orientation, desire, etc.) In-depth Self-exploration (self-understanding, Identity, life experiences, etc.) Adolescent (school, family, relationships, stress, adjustment, etc.) Parenting issues (divorce, single parent, parent-child communication, etc.)

How I work

While I was trained in multicultural counseling, my main therapeutic orientation is psychoanalytic psychotherapy. My experiences taught me to acknowledge the impact of external forces on people. At the same time, I also notice that two people can experience the same situation and have very different reactions to it. I believe this difference has something to do with what’s going on with us internally and how we perceive conflicts in our hearts. Often times, we try to push off feelings due to great discomfort, but therapy provides a space to contain such discomfort and an opportunity to think about it with someone.

As a therapist, I listen and try to create a space where talking and listening can happen between two people. There might be some answers or a possible path for you in the story you told, and together we will understand what they mean, in accordance with where you are at in the present moment.

My work begins with an assessment first. This often constitutes three to five sessions. In these sessions, we will think about your concerns together and determine the nature of the problem. It is also a time to see how I work and whether I am the right person to help you. If we are a good fit, we can then discuss how to start a therapy process. If not, we can discuss other possible referral sources.
